Record Cover:

Research:

The process:

The images that i am using for my record cover are monochrome. This is still a very common technique used in contemporary album covers. However I want to do something different with record cover and not just have a simple portrait.

In Photoshop I layered the images over one another and lowered the capacity to create the illusion of motion/movement. The contrast makes a statement because it immediately stands out. The proximity and alignment of both images worked well i thought because her arm pit are in line, so it reflects the arm stretching movement properly. Although repetition wasn't used literally, the use of the same women in the photo shoot is a repetition of images that has correspondence.

Improvements
Where my work did lack was the typography because i felt that it didn't stand out as much as it should which doesn't match the codes and conventions of  record covers. However I did manage to align the title so that where one word started the other finished.

Colour Alternatives:

I added colour to the images using colour balance, hue and saturation, level.

I chose this the colours of pink and purple to signify the movement.

This was produced using the curves on Photoshop. I like it because it has the a pop art effect which drastically changed the feel over the album. In black and white it has more serious tone wheres here it comes of as play full.

Development of My Orginal Idea:

This was my original complete album cover . However I felt that that because of the laying it lost some its sharpness. therefore for my final image I changed this problem.

This was supposed to be my final image but i felt that it was too dark. Whereas on my final image one picture is darker than the other which gives the illusion of movement more credibility.

Film Poster Design:
Ideas:

Initial ideas:

Originally  i was meant to produce a poster on the terminator franchise based on the television program'the Sarah: Conner Chronicles.' However because the film is coming out next year with a different women playing her role and different story-line. I though it best i tried a different film or franchise

in the end i chose to do Friday the 13th because i saw some original films and the more recent ones. Moreover Horror movies are constantly being recycled and adapted to fit the times. Which made my idea easier to pursue.

Research:

Friday the 13th: Basic outline

A title:

The title of the film poster is 'Friday the 13th' which will be a reboot of the original and modern day franchises including 'Freddie vs Jason' and 'Nightmare on Elms Street'.

A byline:

'Jason's back with vengeance'

The main image:

Jason or Jason's mask will be at the forefront because he is the stock character in the film

A quote:

"A truly horrifying film"- Dailymail

The process:

Image:

These were the images i chose to use for my poster. The image at the forefront was of the mask because it is the identity of the character. rarely is he seen without it because he is disfigured. The mask is also immediately recognizable similarly to the scream film franchise mask, which is why i decided to use it. However there i wish that i used another image either a still from the film or a person wearing the mask because of the eyes. The use of the mask alone doesn't give the sense of realism that i wanted. I also used the image of the Machete which is Jason's weapon this was important because rarely to is the character seen without it in films. The machete also provokes fear which relates to the genre. The hand print picture was also cropped out using the using the selection tool. I chose this image because it signifies fear ,terror to the audience but also most significantly gore, violence and bloodshed because it is a graphic horror movie. Therefore it was important not to misrepresent it because there are different types of horror movies that are lighter which are often hybrids such as supernatural horror film franchise Paranormal Activity that is less gruesome than traditional horror films. In America the film was given an R rating and in the UK an 18.

The title, Byline and Quote:

Originally i used the typeface of the the original film franchise. But i felt that this typeface was popular and used in the horror of film poster then and now, similar to Photoshop 'chiller'. So I decided to the Pialatino
Linotype because it's similar to the modern day poster and i wanted to keep that identity strength.

One of the obvious colours to use as text is white because its the binary opposite of my background. However it was still not as clear as it should be.

Positioning:

The low capacity box used to show to bring out the text of the byline and quote. So its easier to read.

The positioning of every element (writing, and pictures) was difficult to figure out because the poster seemed clustered. I deleted the 'From the producers of Texas Chainsaw Massacre' because it wasn't part of the brief and it gave more space for other things.

I decided to position the poster at the top of the page and not the bottom because it then becomes the first thing you see.

However at with the title at the top, meant the image of the bloody hands didn't seem to fit in anywhere. Cropping the hand and having one hand placed behind the face did improve the quality of the poster because it still included all the elements that i wanted.

This was supposed to be my final image but because the lowering of the capacity the hand image started to fade and become orange. So i increased it slightly. I did this not to lose coherence by getting it closer to the colour of the tile.

Logo Design:

Ideas:

My initial ideas:

1.     Granny''s Diner from Once Upon a Time.
2.     Mystic Grill from the Vampire Diaries.
3.     The ark federation from The 100.
4.     Marshall High school from Star-crossed.

Brief Outline of My Inspiration:

My logo is based on a television programme 'Star-crossed' (2014). Its takes place 10 years from now and Earth is inhabited by both human and aliens. The high-school logo colours are black and red and their mascot an Elephant/ Mammoth.

Research:

Process:

Adobe Illustrator:

Adobe illustrator is the only programme that I used to create my logo.

 Failures:

Originally I intended to make the shape in my sketch as a base of my logo because I saw it in a lot of school logos. However after watching a lot of tutorials on how to manipulate a shape from the distortion of circle or squares, I still wasn't able to make the shape I wanted. This led me to try the simple oval shape.

Sketches:

Here are two of my Sketches which show the outline of the logo and the complete logo. I chose to do the 'Respect, Success, Diversity' because those exact words and similar words were frequently said by the U.S liason Gloria Garcia who worked at the High-school to lead the integration program so that Atrians and humans could live in harmony. The motto that I chose chose further promotes these values and goals.

The Use of Vectors:

I vectorised the image of the mammoth using image trace and expand. This made it possible to get rid of the white background surrounding the image. The use of vectorising also allowed me to enlarge my image without the risk of it pixilating. After scaling the image it kept the quality of the image intact. The vectoring technique was also used in the logos that I research it gives them the profession look.

Colour Research:

The colours red and black were used because of the colours used in the television series. However I did research behind the meanings of the colours and it does relate to the ethos of the High-school. Red is associated with passion and determination which the high-school try to reinforce in the school sport of swimming and academically. Black is associated with elegance and formality which reflects the high-schools the strictness and establishment.

Colour was also an important factor when designing my logo. Transferability is key if my logo were to be prinited on other platforms, for instance newspapers. I tested it out how transferable my logo was if it were to be published on other environment and it looked okay. However not necessarily as[dm1]  appealing as it looks like in colour.

Typography:

When choosing the typography for my logo I initially chose any font that I thought looked okay. However I was told that typography matters because it goes hand in hand to what image you’re trying to portray for your logo design.

My initial typefaces were similar to the type writing style which made no sense because typewriter suggests classic, old fashioned. When Marshall High- School is innovative and modern due to the advancement of technology shown in the show which is significant in comparison to typewriter days or even in today’s society.

The typeface I chose in the end was Times New Roman is a font commissioned by the Times Newspaper in 1971. Although the font is old it’s still relevant as it’s still used today. Moreover it represents the Marshall high- School completely as it looks classy and modern.

I also deleted the MH abbreviation because it clustered the image of the mascot and once I deleted it I recognized that there was no need for it. Some of the logos that I analysed were not as appealing because it looked to complicated and I didn't want that to apply to my logo. The simplicity of it gave it a more sophisticated than it did with it.

The high schools motto was originally put there one by one around the inner space of the oval shape. However this was changed by adding the words around the inner white oval instead of individually adding each of the words. This mad my logo look much neater and well put together because the words curved with the the oval and were placed directly on the line instead of between the larger red oval.

What I could change or improve:

I would improve a number of things including the shape of the logo. Hopefully i would progress in my skill in Adobe illustrator to do so because my original sketch is what it was intended to look like.
